It is every woman’s dream to heal fast and get back to her normal old self soon after delivery.

One such technique that has increasingly gained popularity in recent times for its effectiveness for postpartum healing is the Sitz bath.

In this post, I will help you learn how to take a sitz bath for postpartum recovery.

But before we delve into the steps, it is important I help you understand what a sitz bath is and the benefits of taking one for postpartum recovery.

What is a Sitz Bath?

A Sitz bath is derived from the German word for sitting. From the origin of the term, you can easily guess what a sitz bath is all about.

A sitz bath is simply a pool of water in a bathtub where you sit with your hips and buttock completely submerged in the water.

There is a special bath basin specifically designed for sitz baths. However, in the absence of this sitz bath basin, you can create your own sitz bath by filling up your bathtub with water.

Benefits of Having a Sitz Baths

Here are some major sitz bath benefits:

  1. Improves the circulation of blood to perineal areas. This improved circulation promotes healing and reduces inflammation.
  2. Relieves pain from episiotomy by relaxing your muscles around the perineum.
  3. Soothes every sourness you got from childbirth stretching.
  4. Reduces the pains that accompany birth stitches.
  5. It lowers your risks of becoming infected by keeping things clean around your pubic area.

Steps to an Effective Sitz Bath

Here are some simple steps you can take to enjoy the health advantages of a sitz bath.

Step 1: Fill up your Sitz Bath Basin or Tub

Fill up your basin or tub with 2-3 inches of warm water.

Remember the water doesn’t have to cover beyond your laps when you sit down. It is easier to use the sitz basin fastened at the top of your toilet seat.

Pour 1/2 cup of sitz bath salt into the bathtub.

It is a healthy practice to speak with your doctor and use recommendations from them.

Some health care agents suggest you add things like

for pain relief and other healing properties, these natural additives provide.

Step 3: Soak yourself in the Water and Meditate for 5-10 minutes.

Simply sit in the water and let it do it’s soothing work on you while you relax with mindful meditation.

When you are done, allow your Perineum to dry. Do not rub the affected area to avoid increasing your soreness.

Make sure you clean and disinfect your bath or tub before you step into the tub for your sitz session.

Using your tub for sitz without taking adequate hygienic measures puts you at a higher risk of becoming infected.

Also, avoid using a liquid body wash as this is also considered unsafe.
